I. New Course

EMT 200 Basic Emergency Care (6)
Includes all required modules of the 1994 EMT Basic National Standard Curriculum Patient assessment, airway management, hemorrhage control, management of fractures, care of special injuries, emergency childbirth, environmental emergencies, transportation of the sick and injured, and radio communications. Prerequisite: AHA BLS for Health Care Providers. Corequisite: EMT 205 & EMT 206.

This course along with EMT 205 and EMT 206 meet the requirements necessary to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) E.M.T. Basic examination.  Alabama requires completion of the NREMT testing process for licensure for E.M.T. Basics.

Upon offering these courses on at least an annual basis the athletic training education program may incorporate them as a requirement.  These courses can immediately serve to meet the athletic training elective requirements.  It is also expected that some other traditional University students including nursing majors may seek this credential.  Beyond that, the courses will be offered on a non-credit basis to those interested.
Approved by the COE Academic Council 3/1/07.

This proposal to offer EMT Basic training is supported by Mr. Glenn Davis of West Alabama EMS, who has been to our campus multiple times to assist in the initiation of this process.  The City of Livingston Emergency Medicine Department along with West Alabama EMS have also pledged support in the form of providing the necessary equipment and assisting with providing instructors.  Instructional personnel may be paid through adjunct funds which can be generated from the enrollment numbers.

II. New Course   EMT 205 Basic Emergency Clinical Internship (1)
Pre-hospital care and transportation of the sick and injured using principles of basic life support, correlated with emergency room experience. Time distributed between emergency room, ambulance, communications center, and interfacility transport vehicle.

This change brings the dual degree program that we offer in conjunction with Auburn University in line with the natural resources track within the environmental sciences degree.

This change will likely take students out of the pre-forestry and pre-wildlife programs.  Neither of these programs currently have more than two students and the new dual-degree program will keep them at UWA for approximately an additional year. None
