Demonstrated Achievement Requirements
for
Academic Rank and Tenure

The following policies, determined by the senior faculty of the College of Liberal Arts, govern the application of the University's Policy on Appointment to Academic Ranks, Promotion in Rank, and/or Tenure within the College.

TERMINAL DEGREES

Department of Fine Arts

The appropriate terminal degrees for the discipline of music are the Doctor of Philosophy, the Doctor of Musical Arts, the Doctor of Education in Music, and the Doctor of Music.  The appropriate terminal degree in studio art is the M.F.A. in art.

Department of History and Social Sciences

The appropriate terminal degree for the disciplines of history, political science, psychology, and sociology is the Doctor of Philosophy or the Doctor of Arts in the respective area.

Department of Languages and Literature

The appropriate terminal degree for the disciplines of English, speech, journalism, communications, and Romance languages is the Doctor of Philosophy or the Doctor of Arts in the respective area (Exception can be made by the Dean in cases where a doctoral program of a different designation clearly follows the traditional pattern of a Doctor of Philosophy program).  The terminal degree for the discipline of theatre is the M.F.A. in theatre.

DEMONSTRATED ACHIEVEMENT CRITERIA

I.       TEACHING/ADVISING

A.      Teaching Effectiveness

1.   Knowledge of subject matter, including current developments in one's discipline(s)

2.   Ability to plan and organize assigned courses, including preparing appropriate syllabi in a timely fashion, selecting appropriate textbooks, and designing assignments that are relevant to course content and objectives

3.   Effective classroom instruction, including presenting material in a clear and organized manner, using appropriate examples, illustrations, and audio-visual aids, and creating an atmosphere in which students feel free to ask questions and express ideas

4.   Clear explanation of grading policies and expectations at the beginning of the course

5.   Maintenance of high academic standards

6.   Fair and timely evaluation of student performance, with the final grade based upon an adequate number of graded assignments

7.   Providing, through conferences, individual assistance to students when needed

B.      Academic Advising and Career Counseling

1.   Availability to academic advisees through regular and convenient office hours

2.   Knowledge of program requirements and academic regulations

3.   Awareness of advisees' progress and needs

4.   Sensitivity to advisees' abilities and academic goals

C.      Recruitment

1.   Knowledge of career opportunities for majors and minors

2.   Identification of potential majors and minors and appropriate communication with such students

Assessment of Teaching/Advising

In order to qualify for promotion in rank, a faculty member is expected to maintain a consistently high level of performance in teaching and related activities appropriate to the rank in question.  The performance will be assessed through student evaluations of courses and instructors, through relevant written comments from recent alumni and questionnaire responses from students completing degree requirements, and through the Faculty Service Report and Chairperson evaluations.  Chairperson evaluations may include classroom visitation as requested by the faculty member or deemed useful by the Chairperson.  Classroom visitation by the Chairperson is mandatory during the academic year in which a faculty member becomes eligible for promotion.

II.       RESEARCH/CREATIVE ACTIVITIES

A.  Teaching-related Research
Research aimed at improving teaching skills or understanding of course subject matter

B.   Publications, Papers, Presentations
Academic research leading to publications, papers, or presentations

C.   Other Research

1.   Research addressing a community problem or concern

2.   Research addressing a University issue

3.   Research related to participation in professional organizations or programs

4.   Research required for preparing grant applications

D.  Creative Activity
Creative activity and/or performance appropriate to assigned teaching duties

Assessment of Research/Creative Activities

Research/creative activities are assessed through the Faculty Portfolio, which contains documentation in the form of proposals, bibliographies, outlines or drafts of current projects, copies of publications or papers, official programs, news accounts, or any other data that will help to determine the nature and quality of the faculty member's research and creative efforts.

Promotion in rank requires evidence of achievement in the following:

 
Assistant Professor A
Associate Professor A and one or more of the following:
B, C1, C2, C3, C4
Professor A and two or more of the following: B, C1, C2, C3, C4,D.

Promotion to any rank requires evidence of achievement in D if D is appropriate to the assigned teaching duties.

III.      LEADERSHIP/SERVICE

      A.   University Service

1.   Institutional Service

Includes grant writing and directing; University, Senate, College, or Departmental committees; Faculty Senate representative or officer; institutional representative (e.g., Faculty Athletic Representative); advisor to student organization; participation in organized student activities (e.g., judge of student competitions)

2.   Professional Affiliation and Service

Includes membership and active participation (attending meetings, holding office, presenting programs, etc.) in appropriate organizations; workshops at secondary schools; director or judge of area or state competitions

3.   Administration

Includes administrative duties on University, College, or Departmental levels

     B.  Public Service

Includes active participation in or presentations to appropriate organizations

Assessment of Leadership/Service

Promotion in rank requires evidence of achievement in the following:

 

Assistant Professor
 
One or more of A1, A2, A3, B
Associate Professor Two or more of A1, A2, A3, B
Professor  Three or more of A1, A2, A3, B

CRITERIA FOR TENURE

In addition to serving the required number of probationary years (as specified in The University of West Alabama Promotion and Tenure Process statement), faculty members approved for tenure in the College of Liberal Arts shall, at a minimum, meet the following requirements:

  1. They shall possess the academic credentials necessary for promotion in rank.
  2. They shall have demonstrated a commitment to professional development by having met the minimal criteria in the categories of teaching/advising, research/creative activities, and leadership/service required for promotion to the next rank.
  3. They shall perform an essential role in carrying out the Department's current mission.
