Policy For Demonstration of Acceptable Achievement For Tenure and Promotion in Rank

DEMONSTRATED ACHIEVEMENT CRITERIA

The following criteria for demonstration of acceptable achievement in academic rank within the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics were determined by the faculty of the College. They apply to all faculty members  who meet the academic and length of service requirements for promotion in academic rank and tenure as outlined in the Criteria for Appointment and Promotion to Academic Rank published in the Handbook for Faculty & Professional Staff

Terminal Degrees

The appropriate terminal degree for appointment to the academic ranks of Associate Professor and Professor for the disciplines of biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental sciences, geology, mathematics, and physics is the Doctor of Philosophy or the Doctor of Sciences in the respective area.  Exception can be made by the College in cases where a doctoral program of a different designation clearly follows the traditional pattern of a Doctor of Philosophy program.

Criteria for Tenure

In addition to serving the required number of probationary years as specified in The University of West Alabama Promotion and Tenure Process statement, faculty members approved for tenure in the College of Natural Sciences and mathematics, at a minimum, must meet the following requirements.

  • They shall possess the academic credentials for the necessary promotion in rank.

  • They shall have demonstrated a commitment to professional development by having met the minimal criteria in the categories of teaching/advising, scholarly/creative activities, and leadership/service required for promotion to the next rank.

  • They shall perform an essential role in carrying out the current mission of the College.

            DEMONSTRATED ACHIEVEMENT CRITERIA

I.          Teaching and Advising Activities

A.      Teaching Effectiveness
  1. Knowledge of subject matter, including current developments in one’s discipline (s).

  2. Ability to plan and organize assigned courses, including preparing syllabi , selecting appropriate textbooks, and designing assignments that are relevant to course content and objectives.

  3. Effective classroom instruction, including presenting material in an organized manner, using appropriate illustrations and audio-visuals, and creating an atmosphere in which students feel free to ask questions and express ideas.

  4. Clear explanation of grading policies and expectations at the beginning of course.

  5. Maintenance of high academic standards.

  6. Fair and timely evaluation of student performance, with the final grade based on an adequate number of graded assignments.

  7. Providing through conferences, individual assistance to students when needed.

B.       Academic Advising
  1. Availability to academic advisees through regular and convenient office hours.

  2. Knowledge of program requirements and academic regulations.

  3. Awareness of advisees’ progress and needs.

  4. Sensitivity to advisees’ abilities and academic goals.

C.      Recruitment
  1. Knowledge of career opportunities for majors and minors.
  2. Identification of potential majors and minors and appropriate communication with such students.
Assessment of Teaching and Advising Activities
In order to qualify for promotion in rank, a faculty member is expected to maintain a consistently high level of performance in teaching and related activities appropriate to the rank in question.

The performance will be assessed through course evaluations, through relevant written comments of recent alumni and questionnaire response from students completing degree requirements, and through the chairpersons evaluations.  Chairperson evaluations may include classroom visitations as requested by the faculty member or deemed useful by the chairperson.

II.                    Scholarly/Creative Activity

A.       Teaching-related research

Research aimed at improving teaching skills or understanding of course subject  matter.

B.       Publications, Papers and Presentations

Academic research leading to publication, papers, or presentations.

C.       Other Research

  1. Research addressing a community problem or concern.
  2. Research addressing a University issue.
  3. Research related to participation in professional and organizations or programs.
  4. Research required for preparing grant applications.

Assessment of Scholarly/Creative Activity

Scholarly and creative activities are assessed through the Faculty Portfolio, which contains documentation in the form of proposals, bibliographies, outlines or drafts of current research, copies of publications or papers, official programs, news accounts, or any other data that will help to determine the nature and quality of the faculty member’s research and creative efforts.

Promotion in rank requires evidence of achievement in the following:

 

Assistant Professor: A
Associate Professor: A  and one of more of the following: B, C1, C2, C3, C4.
Professor: A  and two or more of the following:  B, C1, C2, C3, C4.
III.                  Leadership / Service

A.      University Service

1.  Institutional Service

Includes grant writing and directing; University, College, Departmental or Faculty Senate Committees; Faculty Senate officer or representative; institutional representative advisor to student organization; participation in organized student activity.

2.  Professional Affiliation and Service

Includes membership and active participation [attending meetings, holding office, presenting programs, etc., ] in appropriate professional organizations, workshops, or competitions. 

3.  Administration

Includes administrative duties on University, College or Departmental level.

B.       Public Service

Includes activities outside of the institution, such as consulting, public lectures, representing the University at public functions, or on municipal boards, etc.

Assessment of Leadership/Service Activity

Leadership/Service is assessed through the Faculty Portfolio, which includes documentation in the form of letters of appointment to positions in professional organizations, letters of appreciation for public service, outlines of workshops presented, etc.

Promotion in rank requires evidence of achievement in the following:

 

Assistant Professor: One or more of the above areas.
Associate Professor: Two or more of the above areas.
Professor: Three or more of the above areas.
